The workshop will commence with a quick review of pastel strokes and pastel as both a drawing and painting medium, including the use of water and hard pastel as an under-painting on certain receptive surfaces. Thereafter, mornings begin with group discussion of issues and critiques as requested. Included in the workshop will be a discussion of values, chroma, temperature, composition and the artist's vision in creating art with intrinsic aesthetic value. Participants will choose subject matter that both interests and excites them, and create pastel paintings and/or drawings that convey that interest and excitement to the viewer. Individual creativity and use of other media with the pastel will be encouraged. The instructor will show examples from her own work and will demonstrate. During morning demos, participants are invited to paint along with the instructor if they wish. In the afternoons, participants paint from their own setups, with individualinstruction at each easel. Participants will need to be proficient in drawing and/or pastel.
